Revolution in manufacturing:
Bond it first, then weld it!

With a high-temperature-resistant epoxy adhesive, welding after bonding is now possible for the first time – safely, efficiently and without loss of strength, as tested at a leading research institute.

Until now, the rule was clear: welding destroys any bond.
For decades, industry assumed that the heat from welding would burn the adhesive and weaken the joint. Research has now proven otherwise, overturning this long-held belief.

The goal of the project was to better understand bonded stiffening profiles for flat components in maritime structures.

The breakthrough: it works.

Together with the research institute, welding was carried out on pre-bonded samples – with a striking result: the bond remained virtually unaffected, even when welding was performed in close proximity. This opens up entirely new possibilities for modern manufacturing processes.

The decisive factor:
the right adhesive

Not every adhesive can withstand the extreme heat of welding. To combine bonding and welding, the adhesive must:

have high temperature resistance.

withstand short-term exposure to heat (from the welding process).

withstand short-term exposure to heat (from the welding process).

The tests show: an epoxy adhesive with excellent temperature resistance is the key.

The key to the solution:
WEICON Easy-Mix HT 180

This is a two-component epoxy adhesive, developed for the most demanding industrial and manufacturing applications.

Test series at the research institute

To examine the adhesive’s load-bearing capacity, three scenarios were investigated:

Weld 1 – directly over the bond

When a weld is placed directly over the bond, following its path, the adhesive is exposed to temperatures exceeding +1000 °C. As expected, this destroys the bond, leaving less than 10% of the original strength intact.

Weld 2 – in close proximity to the bond

When a weld is placed near the bond, the adhesive is exposed to significant heat stress. Thanks to the excellent temperature resistance of Easy-Mix HT 180 and the short exposure time, the bond remains completely intact.

Weld 3 – through the bond

When a weld is made into or through a bond, the high local temperatures destroy the adhesive directly beneath the weld seam. Thanks to the outstanding temperature resistance of Easy-Mix HT 180 and the brief heat exposure, the bond in the immediate vicinity remains undamaged and can still transmit around 85% of its original strength.

New possibilities in manufacturing

The high temperature resistance of WEICON Easy-Mix HT 180
allows
manufacturing processes to be much more flexible:

✓ combine bonding and welding – without any loss of quality

✓ assembly-friendly production – bond it first, then weld it

✓ ✓ expand material combinations – metal, aluminium, composites

✓ ✓ reduce effort – less clamping and fixturing work >

Application examples

✓ welding holders onto bonded housings afterwards

✓ ✓ combining bonding and welding in aluminium and steel profiles

✓ repairing structural joints with local re-welding
